The top event every year at Oly's school is May Fair. Also, each semester the entire school has a shared theme that everyone focuses on (fall was storytelling) but this spring is India! So May Fair was a celebration of springtime and India. Mama wore her beautiful pink and gold tunic that Papa got for her in India years ago (no pictures, of course.) She was terrified of the ponies, she refused to eat any of the delicious indian food, and spent all of her tickets on pretend rupees, even though we have tons of real rupees at home.
Something that our family, being PNWesterners have missed, (along with ticks, but that's another story) are lemon sticks. Everyone was flabbergasted that I hadn't ever had one, let alone didn't know what they are. In case you're similarly ignorant, let me fill you in- slice the top off of a lemon, jam in a solid sugar candy stick, suck until the lemon juice makes a hole and it becomes a straw for delicious sugary lemonade!
Oly was a very sticky fan.
One of the things that I love about school is when I show up and see strangers (to me) greet Olympia or when I introduce myself as her Mama and people say, "Ohhhhhhh I know Oly!" It feels so good. So when Oly saw Julia painting faces, she had to go up to her big buddy and be transformed into a butterfly. We tried to get her to explain how she knows Julia, one of the oldest kids, but she just said, "Mom! I know her from school!"
The beautiful butterfly and her Papa:
The highlight of May Fair is every class performing a dance. This was the very first performance ever for us watching our little girl and it was pretty emotional! Even though she's a born performer, we set a low bar- hoping for no tears at least, actual dancing would just be a bonus. But she was a superstar!
Watch the video and you'll see. On the last verse I lose video contact because I'm distracted by her looking at us when she came around the circle. Sorry!

That was lovely. There are some things that remain burned in your memory even 25 yrs later, and this might be one of those. I can remember like it was yesterday, a Christmas Concert at Madison school before we moved to Wenatchee where a young Tim and Steph sang Christmas in the Northwest so earnestly and sweet, it choked both of us up pretty good. These are moments you hold onto.
