Can someone tell us how this happens?

We waited patiently for weeks to eat one of the Sugar Baby watermelons we grew. And look what we got! Seven pounds of sour peel! Auntie Margie, we think you can answer this.......

Well, let me ask around at work tomorrow. Watermelon is not a crop that grows here and not one I know well. My guess would be that bees are great pollinators and crossed your watermelon with zucchini or some other cucurbit that you or someone else has in the community garden. Chris might know but he is in CA and I can't ask him. Now that he is working on pumpkins he knows more about these crops and will probably will have the answer.

When I asked at work, I was told that watermelon does not cross with anything else - different species. I was told it must not be a watermelon. Did you buy a plant or seed?

It was a pack of plants. And we harvested another watermelon a month ago or so, but I jumped the gun and it wasn't that tasty because it was too young- but it was bright red inside with black seeds, so it's definitely a watermelon. We have only one or two more that will be ready in a few weeks so we'll see what they look like.....

Poor Oly still wanted to eat it after we psyched her up for tasty watermelon after breakfast, but I thought it would hurt her tummy so I got rid of it.
